Though a childhood bout with polio left him dependent in an iron , Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) keeps a lifetime career as a poet and journalist. A writing mission handling the disabled piques Mark's curiosity and sex, and he makes the decision to research the prospect of experiencing himself to sex. After his overtures toward a care giver scare her away, he books a scheduled appointment with sex surrogate Cheryl Green (Helen Hunt) to lose his virginity.
