The Heartbreak Kid
Christina (Claudia Karvan) is a schoolteacher from a wealthy Greek-Australian family, engaged to a lawyer, and content with her traditional life. She begins teaching at an inner-city working-class school, where the students challenge her ideas. Christina falls in love with aspiring soccer player, 17-year-old Nick, after becoming involved in a campaign by a group of non-anglo students to form a soccer club in a school where the racist PE teacher only supports Australian Rules Football (Alex Dimitriades). Christina is forced to confront herself, her family, and the culture in which she lives as a result of the ensuing affair. Effortlessly combining comedy with a fresh examination of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia, beautifully acted by a young cast, and insightfully scripted.
