Black Is … Black Ain’t
In numerous images, the African-American documentary filmmaker Marlon Riggs addressed the camera from his hospital bed as he was dying of symptoms connected to AIDS in 1994. The film directly targets sexism and homophobia in the black community by juxtaposing excerpts of misogynistic and anti-gay obscenities from famous hip-hop songs with interviews with African-American intellectuals and political theorists, such as Cornel West, bell hooks, and Angela Davis.
