Ésimésac talks the people of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton into working together on a community garden because they barely have enough food to live. By working the land together, everyone will get more out of it. At the same time, talk of a new railroad line brings the hope that Saint-Élie-de-Caxton will be connected to the rest of the world and that there will be plenty. Riopel, a big blacksmith, starts building a railroad track and talks the locals out of playing in the garden so they can invest in his plan. The weight of metal makes Ésimésac's big project fall apart. But can he actually stop progress?
